email received

Last night I received this email from the room moms for Jack's class.
Hello All,

The end of the school year is upon us! We would like to thank all of you for your support and involvement over the last year. We couldn't have done it without all of you. Just a few last minute things for the end of the school year:

This Wednesday, the room parents will be providing lunch for all the students in the class (pizza, Eegee's and water), so no need for your student to bring a lunch that day. There is no need to send your child with money, as this will be covered by our class fund. After lunch, the children will then go out for lunch break on the playground. After break, Ms. G has several fun activities planned for the children for the remainder of the day. There will be no wet play or field trip, so no need for special attire. (Unless your child is feeling festive ). Ms. G would like to spend this last day with just her students, so please plan on staying home during the party.

Though lunch is provided, please feel free to send in any goodies you'd like to share, as long as they are store bought. (Popcorn, chips, candy, brownies, cupcakes, etc). We'd love to have them! If you choose to send something in, please let us know so that we avoid having too many of the same thing.

We will be purchasing a gift card for Ms. G from the class fund to thank her for a wonderful year. Other gifts are more than welcome, and will surely be appreciated, so don't hesitate to contribute!

Thank you all again, and best wishes for a fantastic summer!

Well. I didn't do anything supportive or involved (except write the $50 check for the class fund at the beginning of the year) so I know the kudos aren't meant for me. I'm not part of that "club". But the three room moms are, because they enjoy the privilege of providing the party for the kids. The party the other parents paid for but to which we aren't invited. Feel free to contribute more, though, because obviously these children don't have enough. Oh yeah. Our contributions to Ms. G's end-of-year gift card weren't sufficient either, hence the need to contribute other gifts that will be more than welcome and surely appreciated.

No number of "pleases" and "feel frees" suffice to mask the disdain evident in this communication.

My jaw dropped lower and lower as I read this, wondering if I had missed something, and you'd wrap it up with "isn't this wonderful?"

Lord.

doesn't take much

This afternoon I went to Starbucks. I don't go often because they're spendy and they've monopolized the coffee business and most of the time I just want black coffee. Part of our Thanksgiving tradition, though, is going to Mom's Target and Starbucks on Black Friday. This year we made it to Target but not to Starbucks, nor did we make it to Starbucks on Saturday, as we said we would on the way to the Deer Valley Goodwill. I have a gift card smoldering in my pocket so today, after buying spray paint and water marbles at JoAnn, I pulled up to the drive-thru at Starbucks. Usually I get some kind of blended iced vanilla chai thing. At the orderboard I was distracted by all the holiday drinks and opted for a white chocolate peppermint mocha, grande. One thing I will say for Starbucks: the employees are always uber-friendly. After ordering from the chirpy counterperson I pulled forward slightly, plugged in my ipod, and started a game of solitaire while listening to the White S...

thrifting: getting good again

The Sunday before Halloween I scored this vintage Fisher Price Barn at Saver's for $2.99. When I was a kid I had this barn, and played with it all the time. At that age I was convinced my dad could fix anything, and I can't remember if it was the Fisher Price Barn or the Weebles Cottage that he fixed up for me, numerous times, beyond any reasonable expectation. Jack's interpretation of how the barn should look on the inside. Retro sticker, clue to the life of the previous owner. I should also mention that I recently found another similar Fisher Price vintage barn at Goodwill, but they had it priced at $19.99! At Goodwill! Crazy. That same thrifting day at Saver's I bought this repro Kewpie for $7.99, which is, for me, quite a lot to dish out for one item. Again, I had a similar one when I was younger, but mine wore yellow/peach flowered coveralls. I remember once learning that Kewpie is a boy, and trying to reconcile that with my own conception of Kewpie as a girl. Clea...
